SAT “Access” is Down for African American and White Students

In a previous blog, we wondered what spin the Department of Education would put on the news that South Carolina had the second-worst SAT scores in the nation in 2010.

Well, here it is. SAT scores are down, but participation is up. Forget performance, we have “access.”

Explained Secretary of Education Jim Rex:

“South Carolina is doing dramatically better with access. … The challenge is increasing test scores at the same we increase test participation. When you get a broader cross-section of kids, you typically get lower scores. We’re seeing that with SAT scores but not with ACT and AP scores.”

Except participation is not up, it’s down. The total number of statewide test takers decreased from 25,217 in 2009 to 25,122 in 2010. Fewer African-American and white students also took the SAT in 2010 than in 2009. Read more here.
